Paul Lee is a Senior Project Manager within the Construction team at National Grid Gas Transmission. Paul has 18 years project management and project sponsor experience in gas distribution, gas transmission and carbon capture. For the past three years he has headed up the Network and Information Systems (NIS) Improvement Plan for Gas Transmission. Rather than default to the perception of cyber as a technology problem which requires a technology solution, the team have taken a mindset of “least functionality” and are using a safety technique, known as ERIC, Eliminate, Reduce, Isolate and Control.

The team have made many step changes, including their approach to pipeline design by challenging the benefits of Remotely Operable Valves. The i40 project provides the foundation for leaner compressor station designs through “least functionality” with a strong focus on absolute minimisation of communication into, across and out of an operational site.
